Your Sense Of Women

It was the accepted practice in Babylon 4,000 years ago that for a month after the wedding, the bride's father would supply his son-in-law with all the mead he could drink. Mead is a honey beer and because their calendar was lunar based, this period was called the honey month, which we know today as the honeymoon.

Well-behaved Women Rarely Make History

1903: Marie Curie becomes the first woman to receive Nobel Prize The chemist and physicist is most famous for her pioneering work in the field of radioactivity. She discovered the chemical element polonium in 1898, which she named after her native country Poland. Together with her husband Pierre, the duo announced the existence of another element—radium. In 1903, they were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for their work. Curie received her second Nobel Prize in 1911, making her the only person to win in two different science fields (physics and chemistry). Her work was crucial in the development of x-rays in surgery.

1912: Girl Scouts of America is founded Juliette Gordon Low started the all-girls club in Savannah, Georgia, with the aim of promoting social welfare by encouraging members to participate in community service and outdoor activities. Among the many famous girl scouts alumni are: Lucille Ball, Hillary Rodham Clinton, Nancy Reagan and Gloria Steinem. Today the organization has around 3.7 million members.

1920: Women in the U.S. are given the right to vote On August 18, 1920, the Nineteenth Amendment of the Constitution was ratified, guaranteeing all American women the right to vote. It was a major victory for advocates of women's rights, who had been campaigning for women's suffrage for decades.

1932: Amelia Earhart flies solo across the Atlantic Amelia Earhart set many aviation records and became the first woman to receive the Distinguished Flying Cross. A ten-minute flight in 1920 forged her passion for flying. After completing her first solo bid across the Atlantic, Earhart's next ambition focused on becoming the first woman to fly around the world. On June 1, 1937 she and a companion set off in a twin-engine Lockheed Electra from Miami and landed in Lae, New Guinea, 28 days later. They departed Lae on July 2 towards Howland Island, 2,556 miles away. They never arrived. The cause of their disappearance is unknown but many believe that the aircraft ran out of fuel and crashed. Today, Earhart's legacy lives on and she is generally regarded as a feminist icon.

1942: Women serve in the armed forces during World War II The U.S. Army established the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps (later known as Women's Army Corps, WAC) and recruited around 150,000 women in roles such as radio operators, mechanics and laboratory technicians during World War II. In 1978, the WAC was disestablished by an act of Congress, as a means to assimilate women more closely into the structure of the Army.

1966: National Organization for Women (NOW) is founded by Betty Goldstein Friedan The National Organization for Women was founded in Washington, D.C. by 28 women and men with the aim to "to bring women into full participation in the mainstream of American society." Today, NOW is the largest and most comprehensive feminist advocacy group in the United States.

1973: American tennis champion Billie Jean King defeats champion player Bobby Riggs in a "Battle of the Sexes" match In 1973, Riggs, a former World No. 1 player, challenged King to a match that promoters dubbed 'Battle of the Sexes'. He vowed that a top female player would not be able to beat him. Watched by an estimated 50 million people in 37 countries, King beat Riggs in three straight sets. The match brought women's tennis into the limelight. Today, King continues to champion for women's rights in sports.

1983: Sally Ride becomes the first American woman in space Ride joined NASA in 1978 after answering a newspaper ad seeking applicants for the space program. In June 1983, she and four other astronauts made the historical six-day flight on the space shuttle Challenger. To date, around 41 women in the US have flown into orbit.

1994 Congress passes the Violence Against Women Act The Violence Against Women Act is a landmark piece of legislation that sought to improve criminal justice and community-based responses to domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and stalking in the United States. It was passed with an unprecedented $1.6 billion dollar budget. In 2005, Congress reauthorized the act and expanded the scope of the bill to include the protection of child victims and immigrants.

2007: Nancy Pelosi becomes the first female speaker of House of Representatives On January 4, 2007, Pelosi was elected by 233 votes to 202 as speaker of the House, making her the highest-ranking woman in the U.S. government. She noted that her election marked "an historic moment for the women of America... Today we have broken the marble ceiling."

Harriet Quimby (1875-1912) Inspired by a story she was reporting, Quimby, a journalist by profession, became the first female licensed pilot in the United States in 1911. She immediately made several memorable exhibition flights, including a moonlit night flight over Staten Island, New York. The next year she became the first woman to fly solo across the English Channel, just three years after Louis Blériot first accomplished that feat. A few months later as hundreds looked on during an aviation meet in Boston Harbor, she fell to her death out of a plane flying at 1,500 feet.

Katherine Stinson (1891-1977) and Marjorie Stinson (1896-1975) Katherine was the fourth woman, in 1912, and Marjorie the ninth woman, in 1914, in United States to earn pilot licenses. Known as the Flying Schoolgirl, Katherine thrilled spectators in this country and in Japan and China with aerobatic stunts. She was the first woman to perform a loop-de-loop and the first female pilot commissioned to fly U.S. mail. Marjorie, also an airmail carrier and performer, established herself as a flight instructor at the family's aviation school in Texas, where she trained the Royal Canadian Fying Corps.

Florence “Pancho” Barnes (1901-1975) Though at one time Barnes broke Ameilia Earhart's world speed record, she is more likely to be remembered as the most colorful character in aviation. Wealthy, headstrong and unconventional, she performed in barnstorming shows, competed in air races, and worked as a Hollywood stunt pilot. Just before she took up flying in 1928 she had roamed Mexico disguised as a man. Married to a minster, she sometimes buzzed his Sunday morning service. In 1935 Barnes established the Happy Bottom Riding Club, a California dude ranch famous for parties frequented by such test pilots as Chuck Yeager, Jimmy Doolittle, and Buzz Aldrin.

Jacqueline Cochran (1906-1980) Cochran made her initial mark in aviation by winning numerous air races and setting speed and altitude records in the 1930s. In 1942 she was tapped to form the Women's Air Force Service Pilots—the WASPS, who transported some 12,650 military aircraft in the unit's two years of service. After World War II, Cochran returned to racing and records; in 1953, she was the first woman to exceed Mach 1, breaking the “sound barrier” in an F-86 Sabrejet. A repeated winner of the Harmon outstanding pilot award, Cochran set more aviation records than any of her contemporaries, male or female.

Elinor Smith (1911- 2010) In 1928, Smith, at age 16, became the youngest pilot to earn a license, which was signed by Orville Wright. She made headlines later that year in a daring feat—flying under New York City's four East River bridges. With Bobbi Trout as co-pilot, they became the first women aviators to refuel a plane in mid-air in 1929. A group of her peers, including Amelia Earhart, voted her Best Female Pilot in 1930. Smith set numerous speed, altitude, distance, and endurance records in the 1930s, then took a break to raise four children. She resumed flying in the 1950s, piloting military transport planes and jets.

Jacqueline Auriol (1917-2000) After the 1949 crash of an aircraft in which Auriol was a passenger, the glamourous French stunt flier faced 22 surgeries to put her face back together. Yet her first words in the ambulance en route to the hospital were, “Will it be long before I can fly again?” In 1950 she was the first woman pilot admitted to France's military Flight Test Centre and became a leading miltary test pilot. For the next 12 years, she swapped speed records with her American rival, Jacqueline Cochran. Auriol set her last record in 1963, piloting a Mirage IIIR at 1,266 mph.

Betty Skelton (1926- ) Skelton took her first solo flight at age 12, began her professional career as an aerobatic pilot in 1946 and two years later won her first International Aerobatic Champion for Women trophy with her Pitts Special S-1C biplane, “Little Stinker.” In 1951, she took up a second career as a test- and race-car driver, and in 1959 trained with NASA's Mercury 7 astronauts. Skelton set numerous aviation and automotive records.

Patty Wagstaff (1951- ) In 1991 Wagstaff was the first woman to win the title of U.S. National Aerobatic Champion. She holds licenses to fly multiple aircraft, including commercial and helicopters. Today she is a premier airshow attraction, teaches aerobatics, and performs stunts in movies and television. The recipient of many awards and championships, Wagstaff was inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame in 2004.

Have you ever wondered about the things guys notice first about girls? Well, ladies, men are not so difficult to understand since they are actually straight-forward so it can be easy to find out what things guys notice first by watching them carefully each time they meet a woman. Check out a few interesting and even surprising things men notice first about women.

A beautiful smile is one of the things most men notice first in a woman. Smiling woman is considered to be much more attractive and approachable. She sends the signal of happiness and optimism. Thus, it’s much easier to start a conversation with a smiling woman. I know it's not so surprising since everyone likes to look at a person with a beautiful smile. But men always feel confident and more masculine with a smiling woman. Moreover, smile is a very contagious thing: when you smile to someone it provokes the smile in return.

Numerous studies have proved that smile stimulates more positive reaction. When a man first meets a woman, he notices her nice and genuine smile. So, smile more often since you never know who may be falling in love with your beautiful smile. However, make sure your smile isn’t artificial. You should smile only when you feel like smiling. The true sign of a sincere and natural smile is typical wrinkles around our eyes. Moreover, all our appearance shows that we are happy and satisfied. Practice in front of a mirror to find out your most charming and magnificent smile to make him fall in love with you.

Another common thing men notice first about a woman is her eyes. I'm sure you've heard that the eyes are the windows to your soul. They can tell us a lot about a person. It can be easy to find out if someone is lying to you or simply telling the truth. Eyes are real magnets that can attract and interest a stranger. Surveys have shown that nearly 70 % of men pay attention to woman’s eyes first and only then to everything else. Don’t believe that it’s chest that men firstly pay attention to! It’s always easier for men to compliment woman’s eyes since women respond very approvingly to compliments about their eyes rather than other parts of the body.

There is also another stereotype that men like women with large childish eyes. I would tell that correct make up will do the trick! Mascara, eye liner and nude shades will make your eyes more appealing! If you want to attract him, try to keep eye contact for a few seconds. This way, you will clearly understand if there are any chances to continue with your acquaintance.

Sure, men notice a woman's beautiful and healthy hair. Trust me, all those hours spent in the hairdresser's chair are not in vain. Most guys think that a stylish, healthy, shiny and sleek hair is a sign of health and youth. Also, you need to know that most men like to be with a woman with natural and soft hair that smells good too.

Although most men like a long hair on women, I know many women who wear bold colors and short hair cuts, and they look really awesome! I think men are just afraid of everything that looks unusual and striking. If you feel confident with your hair, don’t change it. Wear any color and length you like, but make sure your hairstyle suits you.

Weight is one of those things most men notice about women. It may sound shallow, but it actually makes sense. You’ve probably heard that men prefer women with curves, but you still catch evaluating glances on your thighs and legs. These glances can make you doubt that you’re beautiful. But, he's not judging you, he's just noticing.

If you are starving yourself to death in order to be skinny, you can breathe with relief and quit it! Studies show that not all guys like skinny girls. So find your comfortable healthy weight and stick to it. Stop dieting! Eat healthy food, exercise and you will never have to bother about your weight. If he doesn’t like your body shape, don't take it too personal. After all, a true love knows no barriers. If your crush doesn't like your weight and he says it to you, he doesn't deserve your time.

Perhaps you think that chest is the first thing guys notice when they meet a woman. But, you are wrong; guys are not as superficial as many women think. Numerous polls and surveys have shown that men notice a woman's chest only after her smile and her eyes. Breasts are usually considered to be a sign of youth and fertility, and it's one of the reasons why most men pay attention to woman's chest.

However, tastes differ. What is beautiful for one man is uninviting for another. Thus, do not worry about your breasts. Just wear appropriate underwear, and consider doing weight-lifting exercises.

Men also notice how fake women are. If you have hair extensions, fake eyelashes and nails, he will definitely notice it. For most men, fake means high maintenance and large expense. While fake eyelashes might draw his eye, he won't like them. If you want to get the guy you like, make sure you look natural. Learn to conceal your drawbacks and show your beauty without looking like a doll. Choose light foundations, nude shades and pink blushes. Instead of hair extensions, opt for a good quality volume shampoo and volume styling products.

Okay, it is not a surprise for you, I know. Most men love slim legs and this is another thing they notice about women. In summertime legs are one of the greatest attractions that a woman possesses. Calves are another thing men love about our legs. They love the way our legs look in skirt and shorts. They love the way we cross our legs and they love to admire our knees. Despite the wide-spread stereotype about slim girls, men really love strong hips! They give a signal of your fertility and femininity.

If you don't have long legs, don't worry. Make sure you provide your legs with good treatment and any guy will notice them. I moisturize my legs each day and take care of my pedicure every other week. I don’t have long legs, but my partner says that my legs are more beautiful than long ones.

Most men also pay attention to the way a woman's skin looks. Numerous surveys have showed that a man sees a good complexion as a sure sign of health. Most men think that a woman with a healthy-looking complexion is healthy and she can produce healthy offspring.

In order to attract a man, your skin should be soft and smooth. Always cleanse, tone and moisturize your skin in the morning and before bed. Never sleep with your makeup on and don’t forget about exfoliating. Moreover, make sure you get enough sleep and reduce your stress levels.

Probably, it’s a surprising thing but most men do notice a woman's dressing style. A recent study has found that most men prefer a classy dresser to a woman who shows too much of her skin. Men love some mystery about women, but half-naked body reveals all the secrets. A great sense of style can tell a lot about you, keep it in mind! Your perfume and makeup tell about your taste. Your heels and accessories reveal your lifestyle and sophistication. Your outfit shows your confidence and attitude to life. Don’t think that men are not aware of fashion and trends. They do notice everything. If needed, improve your sense of style to look and feel more confident.

Women are known to be very open and extremely talkative creatures in comparison with men. But you`ll get surprised that not only men have some things to hide, but women also have some secrets. There is a mystery in every woman for a man to clear up. But unfortunately, only a few of them succeed. Though it is not that complicated to understand a woman, men have great difficulties with it.

It is a very important thing. We do not like to take care, to plan and to do all sorts of things by ourselves. We want men to take initiative. Though, we never tell about it, you should know that it is important that you carry out some difficult tasks or surprise us. When a man takes initiative it means that he is involved, that he is attentive and caring. Do it more often, no matter what kind of thing it is – list of stuff to buy, or prepare dinner, or plan your next holiday.

It is a hidden fear among most women that other women in their man`s life, coworkers or female friends, may attract him more. The reason for it is quite simple, we all want to have something that we can`t have. So women are afraid that their man`s heart may be stolen or he will start fantasizing about another woman. There is nothing worse for a woman than that.

Every person wants his\her partner to be always open and sincere no matter what. Nobody likes being fooled. And, of course, women are no exception. We can forgive a lot of things but not lies. Irrespective of the situation or how bad your fault is, a woman will always hear you out and even help you to solve the problem.

Women are known to have a sixth sense, especially if it concerns relationships. We always notice and analyze all small details in another person, and that includes body language of our partners. So we usually are aware of his sympathy to a colleague, which we have never met. Once we notice something suspicious, it starts bothering us, though we may not be even aware of what exactly annoys us. And if a woman suspects something, she will be very upset when her man doesn`t spend time with her but stays in the office.

That is another secret that only a few men know about. A lot of women actually agree with “guy time”. We understand perfectly well that our husbands, boyfriends need some space for themselves, and that it is very important for them to spend some time with friends, watching football matches, drinking beer or playing various kinds of games. The only problem here may be when a woman feels lack of attention, while a man focuses only on spending time with friends.

No woman will say this out loud. But it is so. His friends are very important for our men, so we want them to like us. This means that we want to show how we love our partner and what a beautiful person he is. Such tendency also helps to avoid unnecessary conflicts and arguments if we don`t like the friends or vice versa. Another reason for that is that his friends` sympathy for you will influence your partner`s decisions in various ways, which is, of course, to our advantage.

If a woman tells that she needs space, it doesn’t mean that she doesn’t want to see you so don’t get in your car and drive away for hours. She just wants understanding. Your girlfriend or wife wants you to know that she has important things to do and you need to assume that she really means what she says.

Every woman wants her man to be honest. So if your woman looks fat in that dress, don’t say “You look gorgeous.” Women always know how they look. Don’t be afraid to tell her that she’s put on several pounds, but still she looks amazing. Show your woman that you love her for who she is. You may even suggest her to exercise together. She will definitely appreciate your honest opinion.

There's something really amazing about being with someone for a long time and really knowing each other. They end up becoming your closest friend. The most influential women are a girlfriend and a mom. You really get your sense of women to begin with from your mom.

You know not to forget her birthday and that her favorite flowers are purple tulips. But you need the complete list. If a typical date consists of you playing Halo 2 in your underwear and socks before angrily refusing even to consider engaging in a bit of foreplay, you should read this, Romeo.

If you believe what you see on TV, women are inscrutable, conniving, hysterical and apt to change their minds without reason or warning. Some women's magazines perpetuate these stereotypes by offering advice on how to entrap men or keep them guessing. And some of the basic differences between men and women can seem a little confusing, depending on your point of view.

The irony is that from conception until the eighth week of gestation, male and female bodies are almost exactly the same. The only difference is at the chromosomal level, deep inside the embryos' cells. Inside every cell of a person's body, DNA is tightly wound into pairs of structures called chromosomes. One pair of chromosomes determines whether the person is male or female.

Except in the case of extremely rare abnormalities, a person with two X chromosomes is female, and a person with one X chromosome and one Y chromosome is male. For a few weeks, these chromosomes are all that differentiates male embryos from female embryos.

Of course, by the time embryos grow into adults, there are big differences between male and female bodies. On average, females are shorter and smaller than males are, although females have a higher percentage of body fat. Typically, female bodies have reproductive organs that can support a developing baby and nourish it after its birth. Their blood pressure is lower, and their heart beats faster, even when they're asleep.

And then, of course, there are hormones, which a lot of people view as a huge difference between men and women. But every person's body, whether it's male or female, uses hormones to regulate and control a wide range of processes.

Hormones are the products of the endocrine system, which includes numerous glands located in various parts of the body. For example, two well-known hormones are adrenaline, which comes from the adrenal gland, and insulin, which comes from the pancreas. These and other hormones are vital to the lives and health of all people.

Sex hormones, on the other hand, work a little differently in male and female bodies. In male bodies, the testes produce the hormone testosterone, which regulates sperm production and causes masculine secondary sex characteristics. In female, the ovaries produce hormones like estrogen and progesteron, which regulate reproductive processes. Male bodies convert a little testosterone into estrogen, and females' bodies make small amounts of testosterone, so neither hormone is exclusive to one sex or the other.

A man's testosterone levels can fluctuate throughout the day as his body regulates its production of sperm. But a woman's sex hormone levels fluctuate as part of her reproductive cycle, which takes about a month to complete. During a woman's childbearing years, the recurring changes in her hormone levels can cause symptoms like irritability and moodiness, known as premenstrual syndrome (PMS).

When a woman reaches perimenopause, her body slows down its production of sex hormones. During the process, her levels of estrogen and progesterone can vary significantly, causing symptoms like hot flashes and trouble sleeping.

Sex hormones can affect a woman's emotions and physiology throughout most of her life. But contrary to some people's perceptions, they're not responsible for every facet of her behavior.

One common stereotype is that women give mixed signals, especially when it comes to romantic involvement. A study at the University of Texas at Austin suggests that the sexes misunderstand one another and that there are evolutionary forces involved. The confusion may come from early human men trying to have more descendants while early human women tried to protect themselves from deception.

A 2001 Gallup poll asked American adults whether a series of qualities applied more to men or to women. Ninety percent of those surveyed said that the characteristic "emotional" applied more to women. The survey didn't ask about particular emotions or specify positive or negative connotations for the word "emotion." But it seems likely from the results that most Americans view women as either able to experience or prone to experiencing a wider, more intense range of emotions than men do.

The perception that women cry more than men is pretty widespread. But as babies and children, boys and girls cry about the same amount on average. Only during puberty do girls begin to cry more than boys do. According to a 2005 New York Times article, by age 18, women cry four times as much as men.

A possible explanation for this is the hormone prolactin, which contributes to how much people cry. Prolactin is present in blood and tears, and it's more prevalent in women than in men. Women's tear ducts are also shaped a little differently from men's, which could be either a cause or an effect of increased crying. In addition, people who are depressed may cry four times as much as people who are not, and two-thirds of people diagnosed with depression are women.

Of course, another common explanation is that some societies encourage women to cry while discouraging men from crying. In the United States, an exception to this standard seems to be the business world. In some businesses, crying is discouraged -- a woman who cries in the office may be viewed as weak or ineffectual.

Studies show that, in addition to worrying more often, women may be physiologically prone to experiencing more stress. For example, the amygdala of the brain processes emotions like fear and anxiety. In men, the amygdala communicates with organs that take in and process visual information, like the visual cortex. In women, though, it communicates with parts of the brain that regulate hormones and digestion. This may mean that stress responses are more likely to cause physical symptoms in women than in men.

In addition, women's bodies produce more stress hormones than men's bodies do. Once a stressful event is over, women's bodies also take longer to stop producing the hormones. This may be a cause or an effect of women's tendency to replay stressful events in their minds and think about upsetting situations.

In some people's minds, women are more jealous and possessive than men are, especially in the context of romantic relationships. But research suggests that women aren't more jealous than men -- they're just jealous about different situations.

In one German study, researchers showed participants images of several scenarios. The participants used a computer to describe which of the scenarios would be more upsetting. The results suggest that, across cultures, women find emotional infidelity more upsetting than sexual infidelity. Men's responses varied across cultures, but in general they were jealous of sexual infidelity.

On the other hand, a study at the University of California at San Diego measured participants' blood pressure and heart rate rather than asking them to describe their responses. Men had greater physical reactions to physical infidelity, while woman reacted with about the same intensity to both scenarios.

Women who were in committed relationships were more upset by physical infidelity than those who were not. However, 80 percent of the women in the study thought emotional infidelity would be more upsetting to them than physical infidelity.

In 1992, Mattel Toys released a talking Barbie doll that said the phrase, "Math class is tough!" The doll caused controversy, especially among parents and teachers who thought that it reinforced the stereotype that girls are not good at math. Standardized test scores seemed to support the stereotype -- in general, boys' scores in math were higher than girls.

In 1995, researchers at the University of Arizona studied how African-American and Caucasian girls viewed their bodies. They asked teenaged girls to describe their own bodies as well as what a perfect girl would look like. African-American girls were reluctant to assign physical traits to an ideal girl, but Caucasian girls gave roughly the same description. Their idea of an ideal girl was 5 feet 7 inches tall, weighed about 100 pounds and had long hair. Researchers called this description "a living manifestation of a Barbie doll".

Surveys have shown that more women than men believe in paranormal phenomena. However, other researchers have demonstrated that this is due to the amount of science and math education a person has received, not due to gender. Women who have taken more classes in science and math are less likely to believe in paranormal phenomena. Doctors and scientists are still discovering other similarities and differences in men and women. In general, men outnumber women in a number of quantitative fields like math and science. One study shows that women who enter these fields are likely to downplay their femininity in order to fit in.
